Our Story
Planthood was born with the desire to offer bespoke soils and indoor plants that are ethical, nutrient rich and completely cruelty-free.
On a weekend trip to Bunnings to buy soil for her houseplants, Lila noticed soil labels featured fertilisers like “blood and bone”.
Suspicious about what growers used in their indoor plant mixes, she decided to go on a mission to find out how many growers used slaughter-house products.
Embarking on a four-month research project, Lila called every single wholesale plant nursery which sold indoor plants that she could find on Google Maps in Australia.
Shocked by the discovery that 56% of the nurseries used either blood and bone, fish fertiliser, or simply didn’t know what was in the soil because it was sourced from somewhere else, Lila was convinced the industry needed more sustainable and transparent practices.
So, Lila started making soils from scratch for her own houseplants, sourcing from ethical suppliers and tailoring the mixes for each plant.
Not only did her plants grow, they thrived crazily! She learnt that the secret to going from a good plant parent to a great one was some seriously good soil.
Like an idea which was meant to be, Melbourne-based Planthood became a boutique plant brand offering sustainable and conscious potting mixes.
